Hey Sailor!
When I was a little girl, my parents frequently took us sailing on our sailboat, “Pacific Dream” which tootled around the San Francisco Bay. Our most common destination was mooring in the protected cove at Angel Island which was a magical place for a young adventurous girl. The island would be bustling all day with ferries and tourists and children and frisbees and barbecues, but the most magical part of the day was when the last ferry departed and only a handful of boaters and park rangers remained on the island. The island felt as if it was our own!
This particular photo and day I had begged and pleaded to wear a dress on the boat. I remember feeling as if I just could not live if I had to wear anything else. This dress was the only cute thing that would suffice, but my dad insisted “No dresses on boats!” so with tears streaming down my face my mother came up to my bedroom and found a creative compromise, like all mothers do - pants underneath my dress.
“Humph.” Well, it was not my proudest look but it allowed me to wear my favorite dress which made me happy again.
Three years ago my husband and I turned in our California life for a new adventure on the coast of Maine and with it has reawakened my love of the boating world. I love the outfits, the sea air, the clanging of lanyards against masts and the cockpit cocktails - but I still can do without my easy propensity for motion sickness - but oh well.
Whether you’re near the coast or living landlocked, I hope this week’s Curated Letter brings you many smiles and sea inspiration.
