"Hurry Ella, it's going to be so much fun!" Leigh hollered as she led the charge down the old dirt road.
Ella responded as all little sisters do, "Leigh, wait for meeee!!"
The girls stood on the side of the bank impatiently waiting for their dad to catch up with the wagon that nearly toppled with all the things. Several sets of mittens tucked in haphazardly - one without a mate, which they'd later find flopped near the front door, 3 scarves, 1 steaming thermos of hot chocolate, a Tupperware container filled with peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwiches cut into squares and the trusty attic chair with a few cobwebs still hanging on.
With impatient, squirming feet, they listened as their dad went through some of the "safety first" lessons. Showing them again how to test the strength of the ice and how to pay attention to the sights and sounds.
"Yes, yes, Dad we know. We will be careful. Can we go out now?" Leigh pressed. He gave a nod and a wide, knowing smile as all his impatient childhood memories came back to him.
"Here Ella, grab the chair. It will be really fun for you because you can walk around faster with it!" Leigh encouraged.
The girls squealed and slipped and scooted all across the ice, and at the end of the day, their bright, rosy cheeks ran back down the old dirt road toward home.
Photo by me. Story is fictional.
I can almost smell the hot chocolate, getting bundled up & playing outside is the best for body & mind at any age.
I can see the pinkness in their cheeks from the cold and fun!
